Dallas Stars Extend GM Jim Nill

The Dallas Stars announced this morning that they have extended General Manager Jim Nill through the 2025-26 season. “My family and I are grateful to Tom Gaglardi for his commitment to the organization and giving me every resource available to build this team,” Nill said in the team’s press release. “I’m fortunate to have an incredible team of individuals alongside me that have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help build our team into what it is today. I’m excited to continue my work in developing a winning culture and reaching our shared goal of winning the Stanley Cup.” This upcoming season will be Nill’s 11th season with the Stars, and during that time, Dallas has put up a record of 403-280-98 and have made the Stanley Cup Playoffs in six of the 11 seasons with Nill at the helm. Dallas made their biggest run during the 2020 season when they made it to the Stanley Cup Finals but lost in six games to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Nill, 65, has drafted a few players who have gone on to make an impact for the Stars, including Jake Oettinger, Miro Heiskanen, and Jason Robertson, among others. Nill was awarded the Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year award for his work during the 2022-23 season with the Stars; Nill is the only GM in the team’s franchise history to win the award.

Prior to joining the Stars, Nill began his career as a pro scout with the Ottawa Senators as a pro scout and spent three years with the Sens before he headed to the Detroit Red Wings, where he spent 14 seasons with the club as an Assistant General Manager. Nill spent nine years in the NHL as a player putting up 58 goals and 87 assists for 145 points as he spent time with the St.Louis Blues, Vancouver Canucks, Boston Bruins, and Detroit Red Wings.
