The Winnipeg Jets announced on Saturday, Dec. 29th that forward Daniel Torgersson was placed on unconditional waivers for the purpose of contract termination.
Today, Sunday, Dec. 29th, Torgersson cleared unconditional waivers and his NHL contract with the Winnipeg Jets was terminated.
He is expected to sign somewhere in Europe to play out the remainder of his 2024-25 season. With the Manitoba Moose, Torgersson has played 12 games, posting zero points, eight penalty minutes and a plus-minus of minus-six.
The 2020 second-round (40th overall) pick was questionable at the time, but Torgersson came to the Moose with a hot start, posting three points (2G, 1A) in four games in his 2021-22 season debut.
He followed up that great start with a career-high 20-point (11G, 9A) season in 69 games during the 2022-23 season. His production took a significant nosedive in 2023-24 where he posted just nine points (1G, 8A) in 52 games.
The 22-year-old winger is the second Winnipeg Jets prospect to go on unconditional waivers this season, following Henri Nikkanen who was terminated just a couple of weeks ago, on Dec. 12th exactly.
Nikkanen signed back over in his home country of Finland with SaiPa of Liiga on a two-year deal. It is expected that Torgersson will have a similar outcome to Nikkanen.
As Winnipeg clears the cupboards and makes room for other players, you have to wonder if more moves are coming as the Manitoba Moose have a win-loss record of 7-17-0-1 and sit bottom of the Central Division and 31st in the American Hockey League.
The Moose will be getting a boost in the 2025-26 season as Colby Barlow and Brayden Yager are projected to start the season in the AHL. One has to wonder if Connor Levis, Jacob Julien, Alfons Freij and Zach Nehring are also looking toward a spot on the Moose. Time will tell.
