Vladislav Namestnikov opened the scoring to put the Jets ahead 1-0 at 7:51 of the first period with a power-play goal. It had been his seventh goal of the season. The puck fell to Namestnikov at the left post for a tap-in after a point shot by Neal Pionk came back off the end boards, and deflected off Nino Niederreiter. With little time remaining in the first, Mark Scheifele struck the first of his two goals of the night from between the circles off of Kyle Connor’s saucer pass, sending a one-timer past Jeremy Swayman.
With another one-timer, Mark Scheifele struck again for his second of the game on the power play to push it to 3-0 when he took a pass from Josh Morrissey, firing the puck past Jeremy Swayman at 12:58 of the middle frame. David Pastrnak cut it to 3-1 with a goal on the power play, scoring his 10th of the season, as well as the lone goal for the Bruins. He beat Connor Hellebuyck glove side from above the face-off dot, scoring on a one-timer.
Kyle Connor struck early to make it a 4-1 lead for Winnipeg at 18:45 of the third period when Mark Scheifele, who had been keeping the puck in at the blue line and drove through the right circle before he fired a pass to Connor, who scored on a one-timer in the slot. Extending the lead to 5-1 only a few minutes later, Gabriel Vilardi scored his 12th of the season, and then Alex Iafallo scored soon after the fifth Jets’ tally with a redirection to make it 6-1 on the power play. Mason Appleton struck later into the third below the right circle from a tight angle when he fired a wrister, finding the back of the net to increase the lead to 7-1… Nikita Chibrikov, in his season debut, scored just a bit after the seventh goal at 3:34 for the 8-1 final.
Jeremy Swayman on what he learned in this loss, and what hurts the most: “You got to stay sharp 60 minutes, and they punished us. So, it’s not acceptable. We have to move forward and luckily, we have the group to do it. …I think some of the goals that I let in, I could stop, and that’s something that I hold myself as a standard. When you let those in, it’s not a great feeling, so I want to make sure that doesn’t happen again, that I stay sharp, and play my game. I know that I can stop those goals, so that’s what I’m going to do, and push forward.”
David Pastrnak on if he feels good about his goal despite the loss, their solid structure falling apart, and penalties: “Honestly, not really. …We actually had a pretty good first couple of shifts first couple of minutes, and then we took some penalties. They have a great power play, they get going, you know, their skilled forwards feeling the puck right away. So, we made it an easy night for them. – That’s when they come at you in waves… we got to be better, but most of it, you know, we gave that to them. So, it’s good to recognize and get back to work. It’s a long road trip, so just going to regroup quick.”
Brad Marchand on the loss to the Jets, defensive form kind of back together before this/losing it in this loss, the PK and power play, and the Bruins: “They were very good. They were good, and we were not good. We weren’t executing, we were losing our coverage, and we didn’t win enough battles. – This was coming. Our practices have been sloppy, our execution has been off there, and it bleeds into games, you know, the way you practice is how you play… So, we need to do a better job at being good in practice and that will translate to games,” – “They’re very powerful. We gave up a lot of seams and holes on the power play, and on the penalty kill, and they capitalized, but we were worse on the five. …Everyone had a bad night, you know, he’s (Swayman) not single note. I don’t think anyone can look themselves in here and say that they had a good game, so it’s part of the group, it’s part of the bad loss.”
