Detroit Red Wings Call Up Goalie

The Detroit Red Wings are coming off a 5-4 shootout loss to the Vancouver Canucks last night. In the loss, they also saw goalie Cam Talbot go down with a lower-body injury during the second period which led to Ville Husso coming in and replacing Talbot for the remainder of the game. With Alex Lyon already down for likely a week and now Talbot suffering an injury the Red Wings this morning recalled their top goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa from Grand Rapids of the AHL under emergency conditions.

Sebastian Cossa

Cossa was drafted by the Red Wings with the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. He made his Red Wings franchise in 2022-23 with the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL going 26-16-1 with a 2.56 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage. He went 5-2-0 in the playoffs with the Walleye that season with a .917 save percentage and a 2.32 goals-against average. He also played for Grand Rapids that season going 1-1-0 with a 5.57 goals-against average and a .783 save percentage. Last season with Grand Rapids he went 22-9-9 with a 2.41 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage; he had two shutouts. He also played in the playoffs with the Griffins last season going 5-4-0 with a 2.72 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage. This season in 14 games he is 9-4-1 with a 2.21 goals against average and a .925 save percentage; he has one shutout.

Bottom Line:

The Red Wings face the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night, it likely will be Husso in net if Talbot can’t go, and depending on the severity of the injury and three games this week Cossa could make his debut this week.
