Detroit Red Wings Make A Change

Red Wings Takeaways overtime win

The Detroit Red Wings have made a coaching change behind the bench as they have relieved head coach Derek LaLonde as we all associate coach Bob Boughner of their duties and are replacing them with Todd McLellan who will be the new head coach in Detroit as well as Trent Yawney who will be an assistant coach.

Derek LaLonde

LaLonde was brought in by Detroit for the 2022-23 season after spending time in Tampa Bay as an assistant coach to Jon Cooper. He went 35-37-10 in his first season in Detroit. Last season, he had the Red Wings on the cusp of the playoffs but didn’t make it due to a tiebreaker situation, they finished 41-32-9. This season has not started well for Detroit as they are 13-17-4 and currently sit in 15th in the Eastern Conference and are currently eight points out of the final playoff spot. He finishes his tenure as the Red Wings head coach with an 89-86-23 record.

Todd McLellan

McLellan has coached three teams the San Jose Sharks from 2008-2015, the Edmonton Oilers from 2015-2019, and the Los Angeles Kings from 2019-2024. He has a career record of 598-412-134, and he’s made the playoffs ten times in his 16 years of coaching. He was an assistant coach for Detroit when they won the Stanley Cup in 2008. He will have the tough task of trying to turn this season around for Detroit as they are looking to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2015-16.
