Detroit Red Wings Bring back Star Defenseman

The Detroit Red Wings won Saturday against the Boston Bruins and sit in second place in the Atlantic Division. The Red Wings minor league affiliates, however, combined to go 3-0-1 over the last week with their AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, going 1-0-1 and currently sitting in fourth place in the Central Division at 3-3-1-1 and eight points. The Red Wings ECHL affiliate, the Toledo Walleye, went 2-0-0 over the week and currently sits in second place in the Central Division at 3-0-1 and seven points. The Griffins outscored were even against their opponents, scoring five goals and allowing five goals; for the Walleye, they outscored their opponents 10-5. Now, the three stars of the week for the Red Wings prospects.

Three Stars of the Week

3.) Forward – Tim Gettinger – Grand Rapids Griffins

Gettinger scored two goals this week, both coming in Wednesday’s shootout loss to the Cleveland Monsters, the AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets. He did not record a point in Saturday’s win over the Milwaukee Admirals, the AHL affiliate of the Nashville Predators. Gettinger improved his season total points to five, coming on four goals and an assist; he is second on the team in points and first on the team in goals.

2.) Forward – Brandon Hawkins – Toledo Walleye

Hawkins had a great weekend leading Toledo. On Friday night against the Reading Royals, the ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, he had two goals. Then, on Saturday against the Indy Fuel, the ECHL affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks, he had another goal, leading the team with three goals over the weekend. On the season, in four games, he has six points coming on four goals and two assists; he is tied for the team lead in points and leads the team in goals.

1.) Goalie – Trey Augustine – Michigan State Spartans

Augustine, this weekend, got the start in both games for the Spartans against the Ohio State Buckeyes. On Friday night, he recorded his first shutout of the season as he stopped all 34 shots he faced, leading the Spartans to a 6-0 win. On Saturday night, he stopped 30 of the 34 shots he faced, picking up the win in a Michigan State 6-4 win. With the two wins this weekend, Augustine improved to 6-2-0 on the year, appearing in nine games this season with a .905 save percentage and a 3.25 GAA.

Next Up:

This coming week, the Griffins will play Friday and Saturday at home against the Toronto Marlies, the AHL affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs; both games will start at 7:00 PM. The Walleye will play three games this weekend, all against the Fort Wayne Komets, the ECHL affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers; Friday’s game will be a road game with puck drop at 8:00 PM, and Saturday and Sunday will both be home games, Saturday is set for 7:15 PM, and Sunday will be at 5:15 PM.
