The World Junior Championship wrapped up on Friday with Red Wings goalie prospect Trey Augustine and Team USA winning gold. The Red Wings had two prospects play for Team Sweden, with one being defenseman Anton Johansson and the other defenseman Axel Sandin-Pellikka. Sandin-Pellikka is now reportedly going to be out for an extended period of time. He was injured during the tournament and played the whole Gold Medal Championship game with the injury. The original report is he could be out for four to eight weeks.

Axel Sandin-Pellikka By The Numbers

The Red Wings drafted Sandin-Pellikka 17th overall in this past draft. Last season, he played for Skelleftea AIK of the Swedish Hockey League, where he recorded five points in 22 games on two goals and three assists. This season, he has played in 25 games and has 13 points in nine goals and four assists. In the World Junior Tournament, he played seven games and recorded six points on two goals and four assists; and also was awarded the Top Defenseman from the whole tournament.

Wrap Up:

Axel Sandin-Pellikka could be looking to make a case to be in the Red Wings system next year, so hopefully, he can return soon and play at the level he had been playing at. The other prospects who played in the tournament were Nate Danielson for Team Canada and Kevin Bicker for Team Germany. Johansson for team Sweden didn’t record a point. Augustine played four games and went 4-0-0 with a 1.75 GAA and a .936 save percentage. Danielson played in five games and recorded three points on a goal and two assists. Bicker played in five games and had four points on a goal and three assists.
