The Detroit Red Wings signed forward John Leonard to a one-year, two-way contract with a $775K AAV. Leonard was a sought-after free agent after a great season with the Charlotte Checkers. In 72 games, he finished with 61 points on 36 goals and 25 assists. He was a +21 with ten power-play goals, five shorthanded goals, and eight game-winning goals. Leonard finished tenth in the AHL in points, third in goals, tied for 18th in plus/minus, tied for ninth in power-play goals, and tied for league lead in shorthanded goals. He played in 18 Calder Cup Playoff games, recording 14 points on eight goals and six assists. Leonard posted a plus-six rating, scored four shorthanded goals, and added two game-winning goals. He led the team in points, goals, and led the league in the playoffs in shorthanded goals.

Leonard, in his 70 career NHL games, has 17 points on six goals and 11 assists. He is a -13 with two power-play points and a game-winning goal. In 249 career AHL games, he has 171 points on 83 goals and 88 assists. He is a -12 with 28 power-play goals, 14 game-winning goals, and six shorthanded goals. In 24 Calder Cup Playoff games, he has 15 points on eight goals and seven assists. He holds a plus-three rating with four shorthanded goals and two game-winning goals.
