The Detroit Red Wings signed forward John Leonard to a one-year, two-way contract with a $775K AAV. Leonard was a sought-after free agent after a great season with the Charlotte Checkers. In 72 games, he finished with 61 points on 36 goals and 25 assists. He was a +21 with ten power-play goals, five shorthanded goals, and eight game-winning goals. Leonard finished tenth in the AHL in points, third in goals, tied for 18th in plus/minus, tied for ninth in power-play goals, and tied for league lead in shorthanded goals. He played in 18 Calder Cup Playoff games, recording 14 points on eight goals and six assists. Leonard posted a plus-six rating, scored four shorthanded goals, and added two game-winning goals. He led the team in points, goals, and led the league in the playoffs in shorthanded goals.

In 24 Calder Cup Playoff games, he has 15 points on eight goals and seven assists. He holds a plus-three rating with four shorthanded goals and two game-winning goals.
