Detroit Red Wings Sign Mason Appleton

The Detroit Red Wings today signed 29-year-old forward Mason Appleton to a two-year deal with a $2.9 million AAV. The contract breakdown is that Appleton will make $3 million in his first season and $2.8 million in his second season. In 71 games this season with the Winnipeg Jets, he had 22 points on ten goals and 12 assists. He was a plus-seven and had one power-play point.

The Winnipeg Jets drafted Appleton with the 168th overall pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft out of Michigan State. In two seasons with the Spartans, he played in 72 games, recording 53 points on 17 goals and 36 assists. He was a -45 with 69 penalty minutes. Appleton spent his first three seasons with the Jets playing in 138 games, recording 43 points on 20 goals and 23 assists. He was a +11 and had two game-winning goals.

The Seattle Kraken selected Appleton in the 2021 expansion draft. He played in 49 games with the Kraken, recording 17 points on six goals and 11 assists. He was a minus-four and had two game-winning goals. Appleton was traded back to Winnipeg in 2022 for a 2023 fourth-round pick. Since that trade, he has played in 213 games with the Jets, recording 78 points on 31 goals and 47 assists. He is a +28 with three power-play goals, a shorthanded goal, and six game-winning goals. In 400 career games, Appleton has 138 points on 57 goals and 81 assists. He is a +35 with three power-play goals, two shorthanded goals, and ten game-winning goals.
