Detroit Red Wings Sign Zach Aston-Reese

Red Wings Zach Aston-Reese

The Detroit Red Wings wrapped up their preseason schedule last night with a 4-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Red Wings will open their season on Thursday night in New Jersey against the Devils. After making moves to trim their roster over the last couple of days today, they signed Zach Aston-Reese after the Carolina Hurricanes released him the other day after Carolina signed him to a PTO.

Zach Aston-Reese By The Numbers

The Pittsburgh Penguins signed Aston Reese after going undrafted in 2017. He has played 307 games between the Pittsburgh Penguins, Anaheim Ducks, and Toronto Maple Leafs; he has 80 points coming in 42 goals and 38 assists. Aston-Reese was traded from the Penguins to the Ducks following the 2022 season along with Dominik Simon, a prospect and a second-round pick for Rickard Rakell; he then joined the Maple Leafs on a professional tryout and ended up signing a one-year contract on October 9th; in the preseason with the Hurricanes he played in four games; he didn’t record a point but had six PIM. Aston Reese has been placed on waivers; if he clears, they can assign him to Grand Rapids in the AHL or put him on their roster to start the season. Aston-Reese is known as an intimidator, having recorded 124 PIM and 818 hits. If he does play for the Red Wings when the season starts, he will provide some power to the team as Aston-Reese can lay the body on anyone, something the Red Wings could use; they had it with Givani Smith, but he was ultimately traded to the Florida Panthers last season.

Opinion: Stars’ Mikko Rantanen Returns to Form At the Right Time

It was clear that Mikko Rantanen was not exactly about being traded by the Colorado Avalanche, the only NHL club he had ever known. It was in Colorado where he spent close to 11 seasons, won a Stanley Cup in 2022, had 681 points (287 goals and 394 assists), and made lifelong friends. That is […]

Edmonton Oilers Playoff Thoughts: Round 2, Game 2

It takes four wins to advance, but the Edmonton Oilers historically lose almost every Game 1. In their last 15 rounds, including Tuesday night, they’ve won only four series openers. Even in 2006, they only won one Game 1. If you include that Playoff run, just for laughs, the record is 5 Game 1 wins […]
