The Detroit Red Wings took on the New York Islanders tonight to wrap up a mini road trip, and they snapped their three-game losing streak, picking up an overtime win 4-3 over the Islanders.
Red Wings have no quit
The Red Wings were down 2-0 in the third and found a way to beat Ilya Sorokin to win the game. Sorokin was looking well on his way to a shutout, but Daniel Sprong continued his dominance over the Islanders with his eighth goal in 15 games against them. Jake Walman tied it up, and J.T. Compher gave them the lead, both of which scored their second of the season.
Husso Solid Again
Husso gave up three goals, and you can’t blame him for the ones he did give up. However, he made stops earlier in the game to keep the game at 0-0 at that point, and he ultimately finished the night stopping 36 of the 39 shots he saw. Husso has been key to this season as he has kept them in a lot of games in the early part of the season.
Secondary Scoring
None of the goals tonight came from the first line, who have accounted for a majority of the Red Wings goals to start the season, with Dylan Larkin currently sitting at second in the league in points and Alex DeBrincat leading the league in goals. Tonight, it was goals from the second and third line and a defenseman. The game-winner, although scored by Raymond, was assisted by Compher, with DeBrincat and Larkin being the two forwards on line one in overtime.
Dumb Penalties Almost Cost Red Wings Again
The other night against Seattle, Dylan Larkin took a penalty allowing the Kraken to score a goal to tie the game, and the Red Wings lost that game in overtime 4-3. Tonight, David Perron took a bad penalty that allowed the Islanders to score to tie the game at 3-3. Lucas Raymond scored a game-winner in overtime to bail the Red Wings out, but those penalties can cost you a game, which needs to be addressed heading into a tough stretch.
