The 2024-25 season has started, and we have teams making moves already. The Detroit Red Wings and Utah Hockey Club made a deal late last night as the Red Wings traded defenseman Olli Määttä to Utah for a third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft; that pick originally belonged to the New York Rangers. Määttä is on a $3 million expiring contract, getting a third-round pick for him is surprising but a job well done by Steve Yzerman, and it will open a roster spot for Albert Johansson or other defenseman and it also opens up some cap flexibility going forward.
Olli Määttä
