The Winnipeg Jets announced today that they’ve re-signed defenseman Dylan DeMelo to a four-year contract. DeMelo, 31, was set to become an unrestricted free agent (UFA) on July 1st.
DeMelo’s four-year contract carries an average annual value (AAV) of $4.9 million per season, trade and/or movement clauses are unconfirmed at this time.
DeMelo played all 82 games for the Jets in the 2023-24 season and set career-highs in assists (28) and points (31). He also led the Jets and finished second in the league in plus-minus with a plus-46 rating. He also led the Jets in blocked shots (139) and was fourth in hits (167).
DeMelo was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the sixth round (179th overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. In his NHL career, he’s played 554 games for the Jets, Sharks and the Ottawa Senators. His NHL resume has 144 points (17G, 127A) and 265 PIMS. This is all complimented with 29 playoff games between the Sharks and Jets where he has four assists and 16 PIMs in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Morrissey will be keeping his defensive partner for the next four years as the Winnipeg Jets look to hit bigger strides under new head coach Scott Arniel. DeMelo has been a key piece of the Winnipeg Jets blueline and he was likely a priority signing for the Jets this off-season.
Now, the Winnipeg Jets can turn their attention to the 2024 NHL Entry Draft and try to free up more salary cap room as they look to make other splashes in free agency.
