The Adirondack Thunder have announced that they’ve re-signed rookie goaltender Henry Welsch for the 2025-26 season. Welsch, 24, joined the Thunder at the end of last season, putting up a 3-3 record with a 2.67 GAA, .908SV%, and one shutout in seven games. The 6’2, 201lb goaltender began his career playing all three of a three-in-three, as he made his ECHL debut in a relief appearance and would get the start the following two days. He is the only goaltender currently on an ECHL deal with Adirondack, and I don’t expect the Thunder to add another goaltender before the season begins. Heading into next season, I would expect Welsch and Tyler Brennan to split the Thunder net, with Jeremy Brodeur expected to see more time in Utica next season after signing a one-way deal with the Utica Comets earlier this Summer.
Prior to going pro, the Lakeville, Minnesota, native began his career in the NAHL with the Aberdeen Wings. In 34 games with the Wings, he went 23-6-4 with a 1.96 GAA, .927SV%, and three shutouts. The Wings would win the Robertson Cup in 2019. Welsch went 2-0 with a 1.50 GAA, a .933 SV%, and a shutout in two games during the 2018-19 season, but didn’t make an appearance during the playoffs. After his first full season in the NAHL, Welsch would make the jump to the NCAA level, joining U-Mass Lowell. During his five seasons with the Riverhawks, he went 29-36-7 with a 2.51 GAA, .903SV%, and four shutouts. In 2024, he was named the NCAA (New England) Unsung Hero Award.
