The Allen Americans have announced the signing of 6’2″ defenseman Matt Register and 6’2″ defenseman Kevin Spinozzi for the 2025-26 season
Matt Register
Matt Register started his professional career in the 2011-22 season with the Allen Americans when they were in the CHL. He spent two seasons in the CHL playing for the Americans, Tulsa Oilers, and Arizona Sundogs. In 73 CHL games, Register scored three goals and made 17 assists for a total of 20 points, along with 28 penalty minutes and a -17 rating.
Register then made the move up to the ECHL late in the 2012-13 season, joining the Ontario Reign. Since then, Register has played for the Reign, Atlanta Gladiators, Americans, Colorado Eagles, Toledo Walleye, and Idaho Steelheads. Register has played in the ECHL for 12 seasons, where he has 116 goals and 431 assists for 547 points with 466 penalty minutes and a +187 in 683 games played. He has also played in 156 ECHL playoff games where he has 29 goals and 89 assists for 118 points with 103 penalty minutes and a +20.
Register has had quite the career in the ECHL, earning Defenseman of the Year three times (2013-14, 2016-17, and 2017-18), has been named to the ECHL First All-Star Team five times (2013-14, 2014-15, 2016-17,2017-18, 2020-21, and 2022-23) and Second All-Star Team three times (2018-19, 2020-21, and 2023-24). Register has won the Kelly Cup three times, winning it three years in a row (2016, 2017, and 2018), where he won one with Allen and then two with the Colorado Eagles. In the 2016-17 season, Register was named the ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs MVP, winning the June M. Kelly Award, and also had the most points by a defenseman with 64, most playoff assists with 16, and most playoff points by a defenseman with 24.
Matt Register’s name is all over the ECHL record books. In 2017-18, he led all defensemen with 48 assists and 65 points, and added 17 playoff assists and 20 playoff points. He repeated as the playoff points leader for defensemen in 2018–19 with 19. In 2020–21, he again led all defensemen with 47 assists. He earned ECHL Plus Performer of the Year honors in 2022–23 with a staggering +53 rating, and in 2024–25, he posted a league-best 51 assists among defensemen.
Register’s career speaks for itself—and he’s not done yet. As he heads into the 2025–26 season, the three-time Kelly Cup champion brings a wealth of experience that can be invaluable for younger players in the locker room. While he doesn’t always wear a letter, his leadership shows through his play. On the ice, Register is the kind of defenseman opponents dread. He’s physical in the corners, relentless on puck battles, and has a knack for forcing turnovers. Offensively, his shot from the blue line is a legitimate weapon. Whether he’s blasting one home himself, generating second-chance rebounds, or setting up a teammate with a pinpoint pass, Register is a constant threat when the puck is on his stick.
Kevin Spinozzi
Kevin Spinozzi started his career in the 2017-18 season where he split the season between the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the AHL and the Wheeling Nailers in the ECHL. Spinozzi then started the 2019-20 season in Italy playing with HC Bolzano in the EBEL. He finished the season in the ECHL with the Toledo Walleye. Spinozzi then spent the 2020-21 season with the Rapid City Rush before heading over to France, where he has played the last four seasons.
Spinozzi has spent the last four seasons playing for Bordeaux in Ligue Magnus. Over the course of 140 games, he scored 56 goals and recorded 62 assists, totaling 118 points. He also accumulated 84 penalty minutes and achieved a +31 plus/minus rating. During the 2021-22 season, Spinozzi led all defensemen in Ligue Magnus with 22 goals. Prior to that, in his five seasons in the ECHL, he played 150 games, scoring 27 goals and providing 52 assists for a total of 79 points. He had 97 penalty minutes and a -15 plus/minus rating.
Spinozzi brings size and grit to the Americans’ blue line, assets that will serve him well in the rugged Mountain Division. Known for his physical edge and booming slapshot, Spinozzi can generate offense from the point while holding his own in the corners. While he doesn’t seek out fights, he won’t hesitate to answer the bell when the moment calls for it.
