ECHL: Allen Americans Hire Assistant Coach

The Allen Americans have completed their coaching staff for the 2024-25 season as they have hired Brett Ferguson as the team’s assistant coach. Ferguson spent nine years in the AHL and spent a little over a year with the Syracuse Crunch as a video coordinator before serving as the Video Coach for the Norfolk Admirals and San Diego Gulls before eventually making the jump to the NHL with the Anaheim Ducks. He would spend five seasons with the Ducks before being hired by Allen.

“My family and I are very grateful to join the Allen Americans organization,” noted Ferguson. “I would like to thank B.J. Adams for the opportunity to serve as his assistant coach, and ownership for their commitment to our team’s success. After five years as Anaheim’s video coach, I am looking forward to getting back behind the bench and to help guide the Americans to success. Our family has already fallen in love with the area, and we are excited about the Americans commitment to the community.”

His father, Bob Ferguson, spent six seasons in the ECHL, spending three seasons with the Florida Everblades and Augusta Lynx. He would win back-to-back John Brophy Awards (ECHL Coach of The Year) in 1999 and 2000 with the Everblades. Bob also spent 17 seasons at the USHL level with the Sioux City Musketeers and Des Moines Buccaneers as a Head Coach/GM and was named into the Des Moines Buccaneers Hall of Fame. He is currently the assistant GM for the San Diego Gulls. The Father-Son duo worked together for eight years in the AHL until Brett got his call-up to the NHL with the Ducks.

For the Americans, this is a solid addition to the coaching staff after the team named B.J. Adams as their head coach. The team officially has a brand new coaching staff behind the bench after last season. Ferguson replaces Aaron Gens, who served as the assistant coach during the 2022-23 season, and assistant coach/video coach in 2023-24 with the Americans. Gens, unlike Ferguson, didn’t have any NHL/AHL experience under his belt prior to joining the Americans.
