The Allen Americans made a trade with the Orlando Solar Bears today, acquiring forward Ryan Mahshie. Mahshie played eight games this season with Orlando. Last season, he appeared in 12 games for the Solar Bears, scoring his first professional goal on February 7th against the Jacksonville Icemen.
Mahshie, from Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada, has had an interesting hockey journey. Before joining the professional ranks, he played in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) with the Brooks Bandits, where he had a standout season, scoring 65 points (34g, 31a) in 57 games. This performance helped him secure a spot at R.P.I., where he continued to develop his skills.Later he would spend one season at the University of Connecticut.
In a press release from the Americans, Head Coach B.J. Adams stated, “We are excited to add Ryan to our roster. He’s a big, strong player who likes to shoot. He competes hard and is good along the walls.”
Mahshie certainly has the potential to make an immediate impact with the Allen Americans. His size and strength can be advantageous in physical battles along the boards and in front of the net, areas where the team might need added reinforcement. Additionally, his scoring ability, demonstrated during his collegiate career, suggests he could contribute offensively once he finds his rhythm with his new team. It will be exciting to see how quickly he adjusts and begins making a positive impact.
Mahshie will join the Americans as they return to action this Thursday, opening a two-game set against the Tulsa Oilers. Thursday night’s game will be on the road, with Friday night’s game at home in Allen.
