On July 21, 2023, the Greenville Swamp Rabbits announced another re-signing. Defenseman Bobby Russell returns to Greenville for the 2023-2024 season joining teammates from last year, Ben Freeman, Tanner Eberle, and Ethan Cap. For Russell, this will be his third season playing for the Swamp Rabbits.
Russell will be 23 going into the season, coming off a sophomore season in which he played in 60 games for the Swamp Rabbits, having a total of 17 points, 2 points coming from goals, while the other 15 of 17 came from assists. Russell also played in two games for Greenville during the first round of the playoffs.
Before joining the Swamp Rabbits ahead of the 2021-2022 season, Russell spent five seasons in the Western Hockey League. Playing for the Kootenay Ice for two seasons. During that time, Russell played in 46 games with seven points. His next three seasons in the WHL, Russell played for the Spokane Chiefs. His best season was the 2019-2020 season. Russell contributed 22 points. Six goals and 16 assists.
Over the course of his professional career, Russell has been consistent in terms of point production. In the five seasons Russell played in the WHL, he averaged a .31 points per game. Meanwhile, in his first three seasons in the ECHL, Russell has managed to essentially match that number with a .30 points per game average.
Russell will look to continue the progress he made during his second season with the Swamp Rabbits. The regular season will begin on Saturday, October 21.
