Trois-Rivières Lions defenseman Brycen Martin is heading overseas to Denmark to join the Aalborg Pirates. This isn’t the first time he’s gone overseas, as he played ten games in Poland, putting up a goal and four assists during the 2020-21 season. Brycen Martin would win a Bronze Medal during his time in Poland with GKS Tychy. The 29-year-old defenseman put up three goals and 23 assists for 26 points in 63 games. Martin was one of the more notable names left off the Lions playoff roster. This is a massive loss for the Lions as Martin provided some much-needed experience on what was a very young defensive core for Trois-Rivières. He’s the fourth player from the Lions to take the overseas route since the season ended. Martin is the second defender from the Lions to head overseas, joining Kyle Havlena.
The Calgary, Alberta, native has spent eight seasons in the ECHL with eight different teams. In 437 games, he’s put up 28 goals and 121 assists for 149 points. He’s added two assists in ten career Kelly Cup Playoff games. The former third-round pick of the Buffalo Sabres in 2014 has played in 21 career AHL games with the Rochester Americans. Prior to going pro, Martin spent parts of five seasons in the WHL, where he would put up 21 goals and 110 assists for 131 points in 277 games while playing with the Swift Current Broncos and Saskatoon Blades. He would add a goal and three assists for four points in 20 WHL Playoff games.
