Cade Borchardt is on fire this season and having one of the best months. In the last 30 days, he was announced as Player of the Week for the first week of December for his seven goals in two games, skated in his 100th game in his ECHL career, earned ECHL Performer Plus Player of the Month, and today was announced as the Warrior Hockey ECHL Player of the Month for December.
Borchardt has been tearing up the ice. The 26-year-old from Minnesota has earned at least one point per game in the last month, with multiple games seeing at least two points, giving him 36 points for the season so far, which leads the Kansas City Mavericks roster. Borchardt has 36 points with 26 games played, 20 goals, and 16 assists this season and leads the league not only in goals but also with a +/- of +31.
The Mavericks named Borchardt Alternate Captain in October after he displayed exemplary skills last season, where he finished the regular season with 71 of 72 games played, 24 goals, 53 assists, 77 points, and a +/- of 24. Then, he lit up the postseason Kelly Cup run with 18 of 20 games played, scoring five goals, six assists, and 11 points.
The AHL Coachella Valley Firebirds called Cade up in December for his first AHL game, where he had ice time but did not put up any points and ended with a -2. Before joining the Mavericks in the 22-23 season, Borchardt played four years at Minnesota State University, where he appeared in 121 games with 29 goals and 56 assists with a +44 rating, ending with 85 points. He served as team captain in his senior season and helped lead his team to multiple regular season and conference championships. He also spent time with the USHL on the Madison Capitals and Sioux Falls Stampede.
This season, Cade is showing the world that he is the future of hockey and precisely the kind of player we should expect him to be. It started with his seventh ranking and being named to the 2024 All-Rookie team last season. The future’s so bright he ought to wear shades.
