The ECHL has announced that Toledo Walleye goaltender Carter Gylander has been named the ECHL Goalie of the Week for the week beginning on December 30th and ending on January 5th. In three games last week, the 23-year-old goaltender went 3-0-0 with a 1.67 GAA, .952SV%, and one shutout. The Beaumont, Alberta, native is 9-2-2 with a 2.22 GAA, .921SV%, and two shutouts in 13 games with the Walleye this season. Gylander is seventh among ECHL goaltenders this year in GAA (2.22). He has also played in three games at the AHL level with the Grand Rapids Griffins while putting up a 2-1 record with a 3.49 GAA and .890SV%. The Detroit Red Wings drafted Gylander in the seventh round of the 2019 NHL Draft. He would be the only goaltender drafted by Detroit in the 2019 NHL Draft.
Prior to going pro, Gylander spent parts of three seasons in the AJHL with the Sherwood Park Crusaders, where he went 51-9 with a 2.23 GAA, .919SV%, and six shutouts in 64 games. He then took the NCAA route, spending four years at Colgate University, where he went 46-46-13 with a 2.69 GAA, .907SV%, and five shutouts in 106 games. Gylander signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Red Wings on March 19th, 2024, and that deal carries him through the 2025-26 season. This doesn’t come as a shock, as the Red Wings have a lot of promising young goaltenders in their system, including former Walleye Sebastian Cossa, who is currently playing with the Griffins.
