The Toledo Walleye have added a major piece to their 2025–26 roster with the signing of forward Chad Hillebrand. At 6’4” and 201 pounds, the Park Ridge, Illinois, native offers a rare mix of size, skill, and versatility. Comfortable at both center and left wing, Hillebrand’s adaptability makes him a valuable option in multiple forward roles.
AHL and ECHL Experience
Hillebrand comes to Toledo after splitting the 2024–25 season between the AHL’s Colorado Eagles and the ECHL’s Utah Grizzlies. In 21 games with Colorado, he notched two goals and two assists while logging reliable minutes against higher-level competition. His stint in Utah added another four points (1G, 3A) in just nine games, showcasing his ability to contribute offensively in limited time. His professional debut came in the 2022–23 season when he appeared in two games for Colorado immediately after his junior year of college.
Western Michigan
Before making the jump to pro hockey, Chad Hillebrand spent four seasons with Western Michigan University, where he developed into a steady two-way presence. Over 109 NCAA games, he produced 52 points, earning a reputation for his willingness to battle in the dirty areas and his ability to make smart plays under pressure. As an alternate captain in his senior year, he posted a career-best 26 points (7G, 19A) in 38 games, playing in all situations for the Broncos. His leadership and physical presence were instrumental in WMU’s strong offensive push that season.
USHL Roots and Playing Style
Hillebrand’s pre-college career included two seasons in the USHL, splitting time with the Green Bay Gamblers and Central Illinois Flying Aces. In 97 games at the junior level, he combined 46 points with a physical, hard-to-play-against style. That same approach has carried through to his college and professional career—he thrives at winning puck battles along the boards, creating screens in front of the net, and using his frame to protect possession
What He Brings to the Walleye
For Toledo, Hillebrand’s arrival means more than just added size. His experience across the AHL, ECHL, NCAA, and USHL levels gives him a well-rounded understanding of the game and the ability to adjust quickly to different systems. He’s a forward who can plug into scoring lines or grind out minutes in a checking role, making him a versatile piece for Head Coach Pat Mikesch. Fans can expect a player who goes to the hard areas, plays with a team-first mentality, and brings a leadership presence to the locker room.
With his mix of skill, physicality, and experience, Hillebrand is poised to make an immediate impact as the Walleye set their sights on another deep playoff run in 2025–26.
