The Cincinnati Cyclones have signed 26-year-old left-handed defenseman Steven MacLean ahead of the upcoming 2024-2025 season. This signing marks the second acquisition of the off-season, joining Lincoln Griffin, who signed with the team last week, with more player announcements expected soon, with many players likely signed but unannounced. MacLean, who has previously spent two seasons with the Cyclones, displayed a promising performance, recording six points in 21 regular season games during his first season with the Cyclones while also playing in 11 games during the Kelly Cup Playoffs, recording one assist; he had 12 points in 68 games last season and led the Cyclones in +/- as he was a +10. Standing at an imposing 6 foot 7, he is a formidable presence on the blue line and is expected to be a key defensive asset for the team in the upcoming season.
Hailing from Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, MacLean’s hockey journey began with stints at the Toronto Aces (GTHL) and the Aurora Tigers (OJHL) before he further grew his skills at Wilfrid Laurier University (USports), where he spent four years before embarking on his professional career with Cincinnati in 2022. He shared his thoughts on his impressive +10 rating season last year below:
“I was really happy with my play last year and I think I grew a lot as a player”, said MacLean. “Throughout the year I grew as a person. I got to get that ice time, player a greater role and get those minutes later in games.”
