On Friday, January 4th, 2025, the Cincinnati Cyclones announced the release of 28-year-old Canadian forward Scott Kirton from the team. Kirton had not registered any points in five games with the Cyclones this season. The native of Scarborough, Ontario, rejoined the Cyclones for his third stint with the team on December 18th. With several players expected to return from Injured Reserve soon, there was little room for him on the roster. Although he played only five games, he showed moments of speed on the ice and could potentially work his way back onto an ECHL roster soon.
Before joining the Cyclones, Kirton had scored one goal and three assists for a total of four points in 21 games with the Evansville Thunderbolts this season. He has experienced a back-and-forth journey between the SPHL and ECHL over the past few seasons, playing briefly for teams including the Cincinnati Cyclones, Maine Mariners, Newfoundland Growlers, and Norfolk Admirals, totaling 30 career games.
Prior to starting his professional career, Kirton spent four years with the University of Toronto in the USports league, where he scored 31 points in 83 games played, including playoffs. Before that, he played three seasons with the Whitby Fury in the OJHL. Over 173 games in the OJHL, he scored 50 goals and 89 assists, accumulating a total of 139 points, which placed him among the top 150 forwards in the league.
It is currently unknown where he will go next after being released. He may return to the SPHL, rejoining the Evansville Thunderbolts, or sign with another ECHL team. Wherever he ends up, I wish him the best of luck in his hockey career!
