The week before the first July deadline is often just as exciting as opening night itself—and for the Toledo Walleye, it has already brought another change. On the eve of the last week of the end-of-season roster qualifying offers period, forward Cole Gallant has agreed to terms with the Pioneers Vorarlberg of the ICE Hockey League in Austria. Wheeling Nailers defenseman Louie Roehl was also signed by the Pioneers Vorarlberg earlier today.
His journey to and through the ECHL
Gallant joined the Walleye in March of the 2024–25 season after being acquired from the Utah Grizzlies. He made an immediate impact, suiting up for 32 games in total—19 of which came during the Kelly Cup Playoffs—as part of the Western Conference Championship-winning roster.
Before turning pro, Cole Gallant spent five years at Western Michigan University, competing in NCAA Division I hockey. While with the Broncos, he appeared in 160 games, notching 27 goals and 71 assists for 98 points. The team named him an alternate captain during his final season, recognizing his leadership and consistent play.
In March 2023, Gallant signed with the Trois-Rivières Lions, playing seven games before being traded to the Utah Grizzlies. It was in Utah where Gallant found his stride. Over two seasons and 126 games, he recorded 18 goals and 61 assists for 79 points. He would earn the alternate captain’s “A” during his second year with the team.
Gallant now joins a growing list of Walleye players heading overseas this offseason. That list includes goaltender Jan Bednar and forwards Trenton Bliss, Tyler Spezia, Mitchell Lewandowski, and Tanner Palocsik. With free agency underway, all eyes are on who the Walleye bring in to fill the gaps and maintain their competitive edge.
