The Toledo Walleye are bringing back one of their top blueliners, re-signing Colin Swoyer for the 2025–26 season. After a standout year on both ends of the ice, Swoyer returns ready to help anchor Toledo’s defense once again.

Big Numbers on the Back End

Swoyer, a native of Hinsdale, Illinois, played a significant role in Toledo’s defensive core last season. He appeared in 59 regular-season games, posting 33 points (2G, 31A), 54 penalty minutes, and a +2 rating. His assists, PIM, and games played were all career highs, while his 2 goals matched his personal best.

When the playoffs hit, Swoyer took his game to another level. He appeared in all 19 of Toledo’s playoff games, recording six goals and five assists for 11 points, along with 14 penalty minutes and a +6 rating. His six goals tied for the second-most by a defenseman in a single postseason in Walleye history. Across the entire ECHL, only one blueliner scored more playoff goals during the 2025 Kelly Cup run.

AHL Experience and Steady Progress

Swoyer has experience at both the ECHL and AHL levels. Before landing in Toledo, he spent the 2023–24 season splitting time between the Hershey Bears (AHL) and the South Carolina Stingrays (ECHL). He posted three assists in four games with Hershey and added seven points in 40 games for South Carolina.

In 2022–23, he played for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (AHL) and briefly with the Wheeling Nailers in the ECHL.

Built His Game at Michigan Tech

Before turning pro, Swoyer played four seasons at Michigan Tech, finishing his college career with 76 points (14G, 62A) in 141 games. He earned a reputation as a smooth skater with a high hockey IQ—traits that have carried into his pro career.

What to Expect in 2025–26

Standing at 6’0″ and weighing 190 pounds, Swoyer possesses mobility, vision, and offensive creativity. His quick puck movement, ability to quarterback the power play when needed, and capability to excel in crucial moments make him a key player for Toledo’s defense as the new season begins. Following his impressive performance in last year’s playoffs, fans can anticipate him taking on an even larger role in the 2025–26 season.

Opening Night on the Road

The Walleye will open the 2025–26 season on Saturday, October 18, when they visit the Indy Fuel at the new Fishers Event Center.
