Jacksonville Icemen blueliner Connor Russell is headed across the pond for the 2025-26 season, signing with the Coventry Blaze (EIHL). Known for his physical edge and shot-blocking presence, Russell now takes his game to the UK after logging nearly 200 games of professional hockey in North America.

Reliable Presence on the Blue Line

Russell appeared in 58 games for Jacksonville during the 2024-25 campaign, notching two goals and 10 assists for 12 points while piling up 78 penalty minutes and finishing +21. He also dressed for one playoff game. The season before, he suited up in 61 contests with a 13-point showing and 80 penalty minutes, along with six playoff appearances.

While he wasn’t the flashiest player on the stat sheet, Russell was dependable in the defensive zone. He delivered heavy hits and consistently defended the crease.

ECHL Journey

Russell’s ECHL career began in 2021-22 with the Iowa Heartlanders and a short stint in Greenville. He continued to gain experience through loan assignments with South Carolina and Jacksonville, eventually earning a full-time spot with the Icemen by the 2023-24 season.

Over four ECHL seasons, Russell appeared in 189 games—including playoffs—and steadily built a reputation as a tough, team-first defender. His physical edge and willingness to battle in the dirty areas made him a trusted presence on the penalty kill and in shutdown situations.

In 2023-24, he played all 61 regular-season games for Jacksonville and added six playoff appearances. He followed that up with a strong 2024-25 campaign, suiting up in 58 games and posting a career-high +21 rating while continuing to bring grit, consistency, and leadership on the back end.

While his offensive numbers were modest, Russell made his mark with the little things—clearing rebounds, blocking shots, and standing up for teammates when it mattered most.

What He Brings to Coventry

While not the flashiest name on the scoresheet, Russell leaves behind a strong reputation in Jacksonville for doing the little things right. His departure marks another offseason shift for the Icemen’s blue line, and fans will no doubt be watching how he fares overseas.

Head Coach Kevin Moore spoke highly of what the 26-year-old defenseman brings to the roster:

“Connor embodies the tenacity we value in Coventry. He’s a tough, physical defender who always puts the team first. I’m excited to have him with us this season.”

At 6’2” and 209 lbs, Russell brings a shutdown presence to a Blaze squad looking to solidify its back end. His experience and no-nonsense style should fit right in with the EIHL’s physical, high-tempo play. Blaze fans now have a blueline battler on their hands.
