
Trois-Rivières Lions defenseman Cory Thomas has announced his retirement from professional hockey via Instagram after just four seasons. In his final year of his career, Thomas put up a goal and four assists for five points in 47 games. He would add one assist in 12 games during the 2025 Kelly Cup Playoffs.
ECHL Career
The St. Brieux, Saskatchewan native spent four seasons in the ECHL with the Idaho Steelheads, Utah Grizzlies, and Trois-Rivières Lions. In 149 career games, he would put up two goals and 23 assists for 25 points. Thomas would see Kelly Cup Action in each of the three full seasons he played in the league, including walking away from a Kelly Cup Championship this past season. In 21 Kelly Cup Playoff games, he would put up three assists.
Junior and Collegiate Career
The 27-year-old defenseman played his junior hockey in the SJHL with the Flin Flon Bombers. He would spend parts of three seasons with the Bombers, putting up four goals and 11 assists for 15 points in 86 games. Thomas was named to the SJHL All-Rookie Team in 2016 after putting up two goals and three assists for five points in 36 games. He also saw action in 30 playoff games, putting up a goal and four assists.
Thomas would then spend five years at the NCAA level. He would spend his first four years at the University of Vermont. In 100 games with the Catamounts, he would put up two goals and four assists for six points. Thomas spent his final year of eligibility at Canisius College, where he had two goals and an assist for three points in 34 games.
