ECHL: Derek Nesbitt Promoted to Front Office Role By Gladiators

The Atlanta Gladiators have announced a leadership shift, promoting Head Coach Derek Nesbitt to Director of Community Engagement. The move brings one of the franchise’s most iconic figures into a new role focused on strengthening community ties and expanding the organization’s presence off the ice.

Leadership Shift for a Franchise Icon

Derek Nesbitt’s impact on the Gladiators stretches nearly 20 years. He first joined the team as a player during the 2005–06 season and went on to become the franchise’s all-time leader in games played (512), goals (166), assists (258), and points (424). His contributions on the ice were honored in 2022 when the team retired his number 17 jersey—forever securing his place in Atlanta hockey history.

After retiring as a player, Nesbitt remained with the organization, joining the coaching staff as an Assistant Coach in 2022. He was promoted to Head Coach the following year and led the team through two seasons, finishing with a combined record of 51-80-10-3.

Coaching Vacancy Remains Open

While Nesbitt transitions into a front office role, the Gladiators have not yet named a new Head Coach for the upcoming season. One internal option is Assistant Coach Matt Ginn, who joined the staff ahead of the 2024–25 campaign. Ginn brings both familiarity with the organization and valuable head coaching experience. Before returning to Atlanta, he served as Head Coach of the EIHL’s Manchester Storm, leading the team to a playoff berth and earning Coach of the Year honors. Ginn also played for the Gladiators as a goaltender from 2015 to 2018, appearing in 90 games. His experience on both sides of the bench makes him a strong internal candidate as the team considers its next move.

Next Steps to Come

An official announcement regarding the team’s next Head Coach will be made by the organization at a later date.
