The Kansas City Mavericks have announced that they have re-signed 6’0″ defenseman Drake Burgin for the 2025-26 season.
Junior Career
Drake Burgin started his junior career in the MJHL playing with the Winkler Flyers during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. In 114 games played, Burgin registered 19 goals and 56 assists for 75 points with 70 penalty minutes. In three playoff games he had two assists. Burgin was named to the MJHL First All-Star Team in the 2019-20 season as well as being named the MJHL Top Defenseman and had the most assists by a defenseman with 41. Burgin was also an alternate captain for the Flyers in the 2019-20 season.
Burgin then spent a season in the BCHL playing for the Cranbrook Bucks where he had two goals and three assists with eight penalty minutes in 20 games played.
After his junior career, Burgin went on to play Division I hockey at St. Lawrence University. Burgin spent four seasons at St. Lawrence, captaining the team in his final season. In 127 collegiate games, Burgin had 13 goals and 23 assists for 36 points with 50 penalty minutes and a -35.
Professional Career
Burgin completed his collegiate career in the 2024-25 season and signed in the ECHL with the Kansas City Mavericks to finish off his 2024-25 season. In ten games, Burgin had two goals and two assists with two penalty minutes and a +2.
Burgin will still be in his rookie season in the 2025-26 season. So, he may still have a little bit of adjusting to do to professional hockey but having already had a bit of experience, it should not take him as long to settle in. Burgin should be a great piece to the Mavericks defense as he may not be a huge player, but he has some grit to his game.
