ECHL Game Recap: Adirondack Thunder vs Maine Mariners | 03/22/2025

The Adirondack Thunder headed to Portland, Maine, looking for their second straight win against the Maine Mariners after beating them in OT last Saturday Night in Glens Falls. It would be a night of firsts in Portland as Adirondack would turn to rookie goaltender Henry Welsch, with the Mariners going to Brad Arvanitis. On Friday Night in Trois-Rivieres, the Thunder struggled on the PK, and that bled into Saturday as Wyllum Deveaux opened up the scoring on the PP with a shot from the circle just under five minutes after the opening faceoff. The Mariners would outshoot the Thunder 16-10 in the opening 20 minutes.

In the second, the Mariners would double their lead just 1:41 into the period as the former Thunder James Marooney fired a backhander in front to net his first pro goal against his former team. Adirondack would quickly respond as Kaleb Ergang fired a bomb that beat Arvanitis’s glove side 56 seconds after the Marooney goal; Luke Reid picked up his first pro point with an assist on the goals. The Thunder appeared to have tied the game at the 9:07 mark on a Greg Smith wrap-around, but after a lengthy review, it would be called no-goal. It wouldn’t take Adirondack long to put one home that counted as Kaleb Ergang fed Caden Villegas on the PP for his first career goal. Adirondack would be gifted with a rare two-minute five-on-three, and they took advantage as Kevin O’Neil fed Josh Filmon for his 18th of the season with just under two minutes left in the middle frame.

Greg Smith would have his wrap-around goal called back earlier in the game, but Dylan Wendt would put home a wrap-around as, for the first time all season, the Thunder would have three PP goals in a game. Maine would make it a one-goal game as Lyden McCallum fed Robert Cronin, who found the back of the net for his first pro goal, but that’s as close as they would come as the Thunder would win 4-3 in a huge bounce-back game for Adirondack. McCallum extends his point streak to four games, putting up three goals and five assists for eight points over that time. Henry Welsch would make 27 saves in his second pro game and first pro start. Adirondack and Maine will wrap up the weekend series tomorrow at 3 PM.
