ECHL Game Recap: Adirondack Thunder vs Norfolk Admirals | 01/26/2025

Dakota Gilbert/Adirondack Thunder

The Adirondack Thunder came into the Sunday afternoon looking to build off the momentum from a 6-1 win on Saturday Night. It would be turnovers that hurt the Thunder early, as James Marooney would turn the puck over to Brandon Osmundson, who got a breakaway and beat Colby Muise for his 14th goal of the season, as he now has goals in four straight games. Adirondack would luckily keep the Admirals at bay in the first as they went into the locker room down 1-0. In the second, the fireworks from Saturday Night continued as Sean Gulka and Spencer Kennedy dropped the gloves just two minutes after the period began. However, they both would be tossed for fighting before the puck was dropped.

“I think there a good hockey team, but I don’t have a lot of respect for how they do it”

Head Coach Pete MacArthur on the Norfolk Admirals

Special teams would play a big factor on Saturday Night as the Admirals would double their lead as Graham Sward picked up his first career goal on the PP at the 13:28 mark of the period as the Thunder found themselves down two after 40 minutes of play. In the third, Adirondack would claw themselves back into the game as Grant Loven would find the back of the net at 5:21 to make it a one-goal game. The Thunder would then get back-to-back powerplays, and after not scoring on the first one, Grant Loven would cash in for his second of the game as it looked as if Adirondack would at least be able to salvage a point out of Sunday’s game. Jackson van de Leest would take a careless cross-checking penalty at the 13:06 mark, and it would once again come back to bite the Thunder as Brady Fluerent found Denis Smirnov for his 14th of the season to give Norfolk a 3-2 lead. The dagger for the Thunder would come at the 18:20 mark as Loven would be called for a very questionable goalie interference call, which erased the Thunder’s six-on-five they had. Kristian Stead would make 23 saves in the win in his first appearance since December 28th.

“It always feels good but we played a good team game and we couldn’t control all the bounces and that’s what kinda got us the bad bounces but we’ll take the good and go from there”

Grant Loven on his two-goal night

Adirondack and Norfolk will close out their season series on Wednesday night as the season series currently is tied up as Norfolk is 3-3-1 through the first seven games of the season series, this coming after Adirondack won the first three games of the season series. Throughout the seven games, Norfolk and Adirondack have combined for 360 penalty minutes, so it wouldn’t be a shock if there were more fireworks as these two teams bid adieu to each other on Wednesday Night.
