ECHL Game Recap: Idaho Steelheads vs Kansas City Mavericks | 03/08/2025

The Kansas City Mavericks ended the three-game series against the Idaho Steelheads with a win, snapping a two-game losing streak after losing 5-0 on Wednesday night and 6-2 on Friday night. Alex Aslanidis started in goal for the Mavericks, marking his second appearance with the team and his first start since joining earlier in the week. Nick Grabko was the starting goaltender for the Steelheads in his professional debut, having been added to the roster earlier that day.

First Period

The Mavericks took the lead six minutes into the period with a goal off a rebound by David Cotton, assisted by Jackson Berezowski and Marcus Crawford.

Soon after, the Steelheads tied the score with a goal by Francesco Arcuri, assisted by Connor MacEachern. The period ended with the score tied at 1-1.

Second Period

The lone goal of the second period came a little over two minutes later when Marcus Crawford connected on a cross-crease pass from Casey Carreau and Cade Borchardt. The Mavericks maintained their lead throughout the second period, ending it at 2-1.

Third Period

The third period was high-energy, featuring nonstop action and an abundance of goals. Just over three minutes into the period, the Steelheads tied the game 2-2 with a power play goal by Francesco Arcuri, assisted by Jason Horvath and Patrick Moynihan. Less than a minute later, the Steelheads took the lead with a goal by Nick Canade, assisted by Jade Miller and Matt Register. Five minutes into the period, the Mavericks evened the score when Casey Carreau scored from the top of the right circle, assisted by Jimmy Mazza and Cade Borchardt.

At 9:47, Cade Borchardt snapped one home from the right-wing circle, giving the Mavericks a 4-3 lead. A minute later, on a breakaway, Jackson Berezowski shot one between Grabko’s legs to score an unassisted goal, extending the Mavericks’ lead to two goals.

At 13:00, a high stick penalty by the Steelheads’ Mason McCarty led to a power play goal by Cade Borchardt, assisted by Damien Giroux and Zack Trott. Less than two minutes later, another high sticking penalty on the Steelheads’ Matt Register led to a power play goal by Damien Giroux, assisted by Zack Trott and Jackson Berezowski.

The Mavericks opened the floodgates during the period, scoring five goals on just 12 shots, and ultimately secured a 7-3 victory over the Steelheads.

Standings

The Mavericks regained their 7-point advantage in the Mountain Division with Saturday’s win. This victory also landed the Mavericks back in first place in the Western Conference, with a one-point advantage over the Toledo Walleye. The Mavericks will be back in action against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits at Bon Secours Wellness Arena in Greenville, South Carolina on Friday, March 14, 2025.
