The Kansas City Mavericks faced the Indy Fuel at the Fishers Event Center in Fishers, Indiana, on Saturday, February 8, 2025. Heading into Saturday night’s game, the Mavericks held the top spot in the Mountain Division and aimed to extend their six-game winning streak. Victor Ostman started in the net for the Mavericks.

First Period

The Mavericks had a slow start in the first period, while the Fuel came out strong, netting the first goal just four minutes into the game. Kyle Maksimovich found the back of the net for the sixth time this season, assisted by Lucas Brenton and Ty Farmer. A high stick penalty by the Mavericks’ Jake McLaughlin allowed Indy to cash in on the power play with a goal by Kevin Lombardi at 9:42, assisted by Jordan Martin and Bryan Lemos. With just over five minutes remaining in the first period, the Fuel’s Jordan Martin was assessed a tripping minor, giving the Mavericks a power play. Cade Borchardt capitalized on the opportunity, scoring with assists from Cam Morrison and Casey Carreau. This marked Cade Borchardt’s 27th goal of the season. At the end of the first period, the Fuel held a 2-1 lead despite the Mavericks outshooting them 12 to 9.

Second Period

The second period was uneventful, as both teams remained scoreless despite each having a power-play opportunity. The Mavericks managed only one shot on goal, while the Fuel registered seven, amid penalties on the Mavericks’ Justin MacPherson for slashing and the Fuel’s Lucas Brenton for roughing.

Third Period

The third period saw the Mavericks scoring at 9:18 by Luke Loheit, assisted by Damien Giroux and Jimmy Mazza, tying the score 2-2. Despite firing eight shots on goal in the third period, the Fuel couldn’t break through, leaving the score tied and sending the game into overtime.

Overtime

A penalty by the Fuel’s Darby Llewellyn at the end of the third period allowed the Mavericks to start overtime with a little under a minute of power play. However, they were unable to capitalize on the opportunity. Four and a half minutes into overtime, a tripping call on the Mavericks’ Max Andreev allowed the Fuel to score an overtime win. The goal was scored by the Fuel’s Kyle Maksimovich, with assists from Alex Wideman and Bryan Lemos.

Victor Ostman saved 23 of 26 shots, while Joe Vrbetic stopped 22 of 24, securing the Indy Fuel’s victory. Despite tonight’s loss, the Mavericks remain atop the Mountain Division, with the Tulsa Oilers and Tahoe Knight Monsters close behind. The Mavericks face the Allen Americans on Wednesday in Texas and then return home this weekend for two games against the Tulsa Oilers.
