Powered by their captain Wyllum Deveaux, the Maine Mariners extended their winning streak to three games with a 4-1 victory over the Trois-Rivières Lions on Wednesday night at the Cross Insurance Arena. Deveaux recorded two power play goals and added an assist, leading the Mariners past the North Division leaders.

The starting line-up for game one of their four game series versus the Lions would see a new face. This included newly acquired defenseman Jackson Edward. In the over 30 games he played with Providence, Edward registered one goal and six assists. The defenseman was picked by Boston in the seventh round of the 2022 NHL draft and played for the London Knights in the OHL from 2020-2024. He had an impressive end to his time in the OHL, being an alternate captain for their championship team. He tallied 30 points in the regular season and 11 in the playoffs.

The Lions drew first blood at 11:54 of the opening period, snapping the Mariners’ six-game streak of scoring first. Shortly after the Lions’ first power play expired, Xavier Cormier fired a shot straight through the legs of Brad Arvanitis from the left circle to put Trois-Rivières on top assisted by former mariner Patrick Guay and Morgan Adams-Moisan.

The Mariners quickly responded, tying the game at 17:09 on a power play. Jacob Hudson worked the puck to the front of the net, where Deveaux pounced on the rebound, scoring to even the score.

Maine attempted to put another goal on the board early in the second period when Xander Lamppa’s rebound effort was ruled no goal due to goaltender interference.

However, the Mariners took control late in the period, scoring three times in the final 15 minutes.

At 12:35, Deveaux struck again on the power play, tipping Tristan Thompson’s shot past Luke Cavallin for a 2-1 lead. Just over a minute later, defenseman Alex Sheehy, in his first game since February 15, skated down the right wing and squeezed a shot through Cavallin, making it 3-1. In the final minute of the period, Chase Zieky added a tip-in of Thompson’s shot with 45 seconds left, giving Maine a 4-1 advantage heading into the third.

The third would be scoreless, sending the Mariners into the lead in the series.

The three stars of the game all went to Maine. They were Wyllum Deveaux, Tristian Thompson, and Jacob Hudson.

Brad Arvanitis earned his ninth win of the season, stopping 24 shots, while Cavallin recorded 25 saves in the loss. The Mariners’ win marks their first three-game streak of the season.

Maine (29-33-4) will host Trois-Rivieres again on Friday and Saturday. Friday’s 7:15 PM game is Renaissance Night and “Let’s Talk About It,” featuring the final specialty jerseys of the season to benefit the Opportunity Alliance. Saturday’s game is “Take a Hike Night,” presented by L.L. Bean, at 6:00 PM.
