ECHL Game Recap: Maine Mariners vs. Worcester Railers | 03/05/2024

There’s nothing quite like a hockey game at 10:30 am on a Tuesday, and the Mariners put on quite the show for the occasion. While the arena was filled with children there for School Day, their cheering and support wasn’t enough to get the Mariners the win against the Railers. Maine just recently received two of their players back from call-ups to the AHL: Alex Kile, their top-scoring forward, and Gabriel Chicoine, their point-leading defenseman. Even having the strength of them back in the line-up wasn’t enough to cut it.

In goal for the Mariners was Brad Arvantitis, and John Muse was in for the Railers. The Railers started out the game strong when Zach White scored only 35 seconds into the first period. Maine responded at 10:49 in the first with a goal from Owen Pederson, who just returned to the ice after an injury at the Mariners’ last game, which was against the Norfolk Admirals on March 2nd. This would be the Mariners’ only goal in the game. There was only one penalty called in the first which, was against Worcester player Artyom Kulakov for hooking.

Only 1:51 into the second, Railers’ Jake Pivonta received a penalty for delay of game. He would also have the next and final goal of the game at 7:28 in the second, which Railers’ goalie Muse notably received an assist on. Other penalties called during this period were Mariners’ Brooklyn Kalmikov at 8:04 for slashing, Mariners’ Tyler Drevitch at 11:31 for holding, and Railers’ Zach White at 16:06 for slashing.

The third period was a scoreless one, but there were a few penalties. At 12:15, Mariners’ Wyllum Deveaux was called for boarding. The next three penalties were committed by the Railers; Anthony Callin at 12:55 for hooking, Artyom Julakov at 15:17 for tripping, and Trevor Cosgrove at 19:04 for delay of game. The final penalty of the game was delivered to Mariners player Jimmy Lambert for holding.

The Mariners now find themselves down to 6th place in the division, while the Railers are now up to 4th. The Mariners’ next chance at redemption is this coming Friday, where they will face the Adirondack Thunder, currently #1 in the division, at home in Portland.
