The Adirondack Thunder came into Sunday afternoon desperately needing a win as they had been outscored 16-5 in the first three games of the road trip and had lost the last four games. It would be the best start in a long time for Adirondack as they would outshoot the South Carolina Stingrays 14-8 in the opening period and had a lot of solid chances despite either team being able to open up the scoring in the opening 20 minutes of the game.
In the second, the Thunder finally get on the board as just after their first powerplay opportunity expired, Alex Young would find the back of the net for his second goal of the season at the 8:56 mark. Adirondack would add an insurance goal before the end of the second as, on a three-on-one, Ryan Smith would feed Andre Ghantous, who fired a shot into a wide-open net at the 14:56 mark of the period. In the third, Josh Filmon, who was one of the few bright spots for the Thunder on the weekend, would net his third goal in three games to give Adirondack a 3-0 lead at the 11:46 mark of the third period, less than two minutes later it would be T.J. Friedmann who got a breakaway coming out of the penalty box and would beat Garin Bjorklund for his third of the year to give the Thunder a 4-0 lead. Kevin O’Neil, who spent three seasons with South Carolina, would add an empty-netter to put a five-spot up on the board, which is the most goals the team has scored since November 19th at Norfolk. O’Neil finished the weekend with a goal and an assist against his former team.
It was an easy night for Jeremy Brodeur, who needed a bounce-back win and got one as he made 20 saves, and the only shot beating him was from Jordan Engelbert, who scored on a six-on-five after SC pulled their goalie with under four minutes left in the third period and down by four. For South Carolina, this is the first time they had lost in regulation on home ice all season as they were 6-0-1-0 going into Sunday Afternoon.
