ECHL Game Recap: Tahoe Knight Monsters vs Kansas City Mavericks | 02/01/2025

On Saturday night, the Kansas City Mavericks faced off against the Tahoe Knight Monsters at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence, Missouri, for a highly anticipated rematch in front of a sold-out crowd. The Knight Monsters hoped to take home at least one game of the series after losing the last two and dropping to second place in the Mountain Division. Starting in goal for the Mavericks was Victor Ostman, recently back from Coachella Valley, with a 2.4 GAA and a 0.905 SV% going into Saturday’s game. The starting goalie for the Knight Monsters was Jordan Papirny, with a 2.34 GAA and a 0.925 SV%.

First Period

The first period started fast-paced, with both teams battling for the puck. Jackson Berezowski struck first with a Mavericks goal at 2:23 into the period, assisted by Landon McCallum and David Cotton. This was Berezowski’s 15th goal of the season.

Shortly after, the Knight Monsters’ Troy Loggins tied the score at 5:19 with an assist from Logan Nelson. At 18:37, Berezowski received a penalty for holding, but the Knight Monsters were unsuccessful on the power play. The score at the end of the first period was tied 1-1.

Second Period

The second period was light on scoring but heavy on penalties. The lone goal was scored by the Knight Monsters’ Sloan Stanick at 10:41, assisted by Simon Pinard and Jordan Papirny. The first penalty was given to Knight Monster Aidan Girduckis for hooking, leading to an unsuccessful power play by the Mavericks. Amidst intense play and rising tempers, the Knight Monsters’ Jett Jones received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at 10:41, but the Mavericks were unable to capitalize on the ensuing power play.

At the same time, Knight Monster Sloan Stanick and Mavericks’ Marcus Crawford traded roughing minors. Later, Knight Monster Bear Hughes was caught holding the stick and received a minor penalty along with Landon McCallum, who received a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. To end the period, Mavericks’ Marcus Crawford received a cross-checking minor penalty, but the Knight Monsters were unable to capitalize on the power play, ending the period with a score of 2-1 in the Knight Monsters’ favor.

Third Period

Cam Morrison started the third period with a goal at 1:59, assisted by Justin MacPherson and Marcus Crawford, tying the score at 2-2. In the ongoing back-and-forth contest, the Knight Monsters took the lead with a goal from Jake Johnson at 7:48, assisted by Troy Loggins and Logan Nelson. The Mavericks soon tied the score again with a goal by Max Andreev at 8:37, assisted by Casey Carreau and Damien Giroux. With the score tied at 3-3, Brennan Kapcheck received a cross-checking penalty at 19:17, which carried into overtime.

Overtime

Overtime started with a four-on-three advantage for the Mavericks, but they were unable to capitalize on the power play. Shortly after, Justin MacPherson, assisted by David Cotton, found the back of the net, securing the win and completing the Mavericks’ series sweep with a final score of 4-3. Victor Ostman stopped 33 out of 36 shots on goal. This win gives the Mavericks a four-point lead in the Mountain Division standings.
