The Kansas City Mavericks are set to face the Tulsa Oilers for the second time this week. Their previous encounter was on Friday, February 14, 2025, at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence, Missouri, where the Mavericks secured a 3-1 victory. This matchup promises to be as thrilling as previous meetings, with both teams battling for vital points in the Mountain Division standings. Jack LaFontaine returns to the net for the Mavericks, aiming to secure his 13th win for the season. Talyn Boyko is starting again for the Oilers.

First Period

The game began with the intensity fans have come to expect from the Mavericks, as a fight erupted less than three minutes in. The altercation between the Oilers’ Cade McNelly and the Mavericks’ Josh Thrower resulted in five-minute penalties for both players. Despite the physical battle and a combined 12 shots on goal, the first period remained scoreless with no additional penalties.

Second Period

Although the second period started with less intensity, it was still filled with excitement. Both teams fought hard to gain the upper hand, each registering nine shots on goal. However, neither side could break through the outstanding goaltending on display. The only penalty of the period came at 2:26 when the Oilers’ Tyler Poulsen was called for slashing, but the Mavericks could not capitalize on the power play.

Third Period

The third period mirrored the first two, with neither team managing to find the back of the net. The Mavericks controlled much of the play, nearly doubling the Oilers’ shot count with nine shots on goal, but both goaltenders remained solid. With neither team able to score through three periods, the game remained locked at 0-0, sending it into overtime.

Overtime

Overtime played out much like the previous three periods, with both teams struggling to break through the stellar goaltending. After seven minutes of intense play, neither side could gain the upper hand, leading to a shootout.

Shootout

Round 1: The Oilers’ Reid Petryk skated in first but was denied by Mavericks’ goalie Jack LaFontaine with a poke check. On the other end, the Mavericks’ Cade Borchardt flipped the puck past Talyn Boyko’s glove, putting Kansas City ahead 1-0.

Round 2: Tulsa’s Easton Brodzinski couldn’t sneak one past LaFontaine, while the Mavericks’ Max Andreev was stopped blocker side by Boyko.

Round 3: With the game on the line, the Oilers’ Conner Roulette was denied by a pad save from LaFontaine, giving the Mavericks a 1-0 victory.

Jack Lafontaine led the Mavericks to victory with a shutout against the Tulsa Oilers. The upcoming rematch is scheduled for Sunday, February 16, 2025, at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with the puck dropping at 3:05 PM CST.
