ECHL Game Recap: Utah Grizzlies vs Kansas City Mavericks | 02/26/2025

The Kansas City Mavericks meet up with the Utah Grizzlies at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence, Missouri, for the sixth matchup this season. The Mavericks hold first place in the Mountain Division standings and hope to maintain their seven-point advantage. Starting in the net for the Mavericks is Victor Ostman, with 2.46 goals against average (GAA) and 0.905 save percentage (SV%) going into Wednesday night’s game. Jake Barczewski will start in the net for the Grizzlies with 3.64 GAA and 0.897 SV%. 

First Period

The Mavericks outshot the Grizzlies 20-7 in the first period, earning them three goals. The first goal for the Mavericks came at 5:44 by Damien Giroux, assisted by Landon McCallum and David Cotton. A few minutes later, Max Andreev slammed one home from the far post, assisted by Cade Borchardt and Casey Carreau. The third goal came from the top of the slot by Damien Giroux at 10:31, assisted by Luke Loheit and Charlie Wright. The Maverick’s defense held the Grizzlies scoreless during the period. The only penalty of the period was Grizzlies’ Mick Messner for tripping at 19:41, allowing the Mavericks to start the second period on a power play. The score at the end of the first period favored the Mavericks 3-0. 

Second Period

Less than one minute into the second period, David Cotton was able to cash in on the power play assisted by Justin MacPherson and Nolan Sullivan. The first scoring opportunity came for Mick Messner with an unassisted goal at 5:47 to put the Grizzlies on the board. At 12 minutes into the period, David Cotton scored again, further widening the Mavericks lead 5-1 going into the third period. 

Third Period

The third period started out just as exciting as the previous periods, with Max Andreev scoring his second game goal in less than one minute. Charlie Wright and Cade Borchardt assisted Andreev’s goal. At 7:47, the Grizzlies’ Briley Wood scored an unassisted goal. To keep the excitement going, the Mavericks Damien Giroux scored a hat trick at 14:39. This was the first hat trick at home for the Mavericks this season. Landon McCallum and Jake McLaughlin assisted on Giroux’s goal. Less than a minute later, Max Andreev scored his third goal and the second hat trick of the game, assisted by Cade Borchardt. The Grizzles rallied late with a goal by Cole Gallant, assisted by Craig Armstrong, at 19:08. The Mavericks defeated the Grizzlies by a final score of 8 to 3.

Summary

The Mavericks outshot the Grizzles 47 to 26. The Mavericks were 50% on the power play, while the Grizzlies were 0/2. Victor Ostman stopped 23/26 shots to help lead his team to victory. The Mavericks maintain the lead in the Mountain division with 75 points. The next game is Friday, February 28, against the Utah Grizzlies.
