Amongst tonight’s ECHL South Division matchups is the Atlanta Gladiators vs. Savannah Ghost Pirates. In the 34 home games that the Savannah Ghost Pirates have had in their inaugural season, 31 of them have been sold out, matching the ECHL single-season sellout record. This is the first home game for the Ghost Pirates since their previous one against the Swamp Rabbits on Sunday, March 12th. Since that game, many roster changes have flowed through Vegas, Henderson, and Savannah. Most of these changes have been due to injuries to the Vegas Golden Knights’ goalies, but others have been due to Savannah player injuries. The Ghost Pirates’ popular goalies Isaiah Saville and Jordan Papirny have been called up to Henderson frequently this month as Adin Hill and Logan Thompson have been injured and absent from Vegas for the majority of March. In their absence, Michael Bullion has done incredibly well protecting the nets of Savannah and now joins Saville and Papirny as Savannah favorites.
As the Ghost Pirates are officially matching the ECHL record for single-season sellouts with today’s ticket sales, it wouldn’t be surprising if they were to break the record at their next home game on Sunday, April 2nd. Hockey is Savannah‘s newest sport, and it has been truly embraced by the Southern Hostess City. While Savannah will not be represented in this year’s ECHL season playoffs, they have had more than a treasure chest full of surprises for their new fans this inaugural season. In terms of sports, Savannah has previously been well known for the baseball team the Sand Gnats, now called the Savannah Bananas, who play at the historic Grayson Stadium, which has hosted the likes of the great Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Jackie Robinson, and Mickey Mantel. It is certain that the Ghost Pirates’ haunt will continue to reign for many seasons to come.
