ECHL: Greenville Signs Defenseman Josh Atkinson

The Greenville Swamp Rabbits have added a proven two-way defenseman with a wealth of international and North American experience, signing 32-year-old Josh Atkinson for the 2025-26 season. The St. Albert, Alberta native brings over 230 professional games in the ECHL and AHL, plus four seasons in Europe, to Greenville’s blue line.

From Europe Back to the South Division

Atkinson spent the last four seasons overseas, including three with Hungary’s Fehérvár AV19 in the ICEHL, where he recorded 80 points (25g-55a) in 136 games. His 2024-25 campaign saw him post 22 points in 44 games before adding an assist in seven playoff contests. His European tenure also included a stint in the DEL with the Bietigheim Steelers.

Now returning to the ECHL for the first time since 2018-19, Atkinson says the move was about getting back to the style of game he loves.

“Covid presented me with an opportunity four seasons ago to play in Europe. I learned a ton overseas, but I really enjoy the North American game, so I’m excited to be coming back as a Swamp Rabbit and with Coach Costello at the helm” (Swamp Rabbits Hockey, 2025).

Proven Depth in the ECHL and AHL

Before heading to Europe, Atkinson built a strong North American resume. He played 157 ECHL games with the Atlanta Gladiators and Allen Americans, tallying 92 points, and 79 AHL games with the Iowa Wild and Chicago Wolves. His speed and transitional play stood out, making him a threat on both special teams and at even strength.

Coach Chad Costello praised Atkinson’s well-rounded game:

“Josh has a great balance of skill, speed, and hard-nosed hockey. He can skate with anyone, and his speed and instincts on both sides of the puck allow him to be used in all situations” (Swamp Rabbits Hockey, 2025).

From Alaska to Atlanta and Beyond

Atkinson’s pro career followed a four-year run at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, where he earned 2016 WCHA All-Academic honors and 48 points in 144 games. He also played two seasons in the AJHL with the Lloydminster Bobcats before signing with the Gladiators in 2015-16.

Looking Ahead

Atkinson joins a Swamp Rabbits defensive corps that already includes Dustin Geregach, Tristan De Jong, Jordan Power, and Jacob Modry. His experience will be invaluable for younger blue-liners, particularly in high-pressure divisional matchups. Known for his ability to transition quickly from defense to offense, Atkinson’s puck-moving skills could help Greenville generate more scoring from the back end, especially against fast-paced South Division rivals.

Greenville fans won’t have to wait long to see him in action — the Swamp Rabbits open the 2025-26 season on Friday, October 17th, hosting the Utah Grizzlies at Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:05 PM EDT in what promises to be an electric home opener.
