The Greenville Swamp Rabbits have added a big piece to their blue line, signing 23-year-old defenseman Jake Murray for the 2025–26 ECHL season.

Building on a Breakout Season

Murray is coming off a strong 2024–25 campaign with the Bloomington Bison, where he played a full 72 games and tallied 34 points (5 goals, 29 assists). His steady production and ability to log heavy minutes made him one of Bloomington’s most reliable defensemen. At 6’3” and 198 pounds, Murray pairs size with puck-moving ability, making him a versatile presence who can contribute on both ends of the ice.

AHL and Playoff Experience

In addition to his breakout year, Murray earned call-up time with the Texas Stars in the AHL during the 2023–24 season, appearing in 19 games. That stretch gave him valuable exposure to higher-level competition and helped round out his defensive game.

Murray has also built a playoff résumé early in his pro career. He skated in 10 postseason games for the Idaho Steelheads in 2023–24, recording 5 points, and suited up for 9 playoff contests with the Cincinnati Cyclones in 2022–23. His ability to elevate his game in meaningful situations will be a welcome asset for Greenville as they look to stay competitive in the South Division.

OHL Background

Before turning pro, Murray spent four seasons with the Kingston Frontenacs in the OHL, serving as an alternate captain for three of them. In his final full season with Kingston (2021–22), he posted 37 points in 65 games and added another 7 points in the playoffs. He also made a midseason stop with the Guelph Storm in 2022–23, where he brought veteran leadership to their defensive corps. Across 257 OHL games, Murray compiled 17 goals and 86 assists for 103 points, along with over 80 PIM.

Why This Matters

Greenville continues to shape its roster with players who can make an immediate impact, and Murray fits that mold. His combination of size, leadership, and offensive upside strengthens the Swamp Rabbits’ defensive depth and gives the coaching staff more flexibility on the blue line.

Fans should expect Murray to be more than just a shutdown defender—he has shown the ability to move the puck with confidence, contribute on special teams, and adapt quickly to higher competition. With his age and experience, he’s a player who can take on significant minutes and grow into a key role this season.
