The Idaho Steelheads have announced that they have signed 5’10” forward Liam Malmquist for the 2025-26 season.

Liam Malmquist started his junior career in the 2019-20 season with the Penticton Vees in the BCHL. In his two seasons with the Vees, Malmquist played in 78 games where he had 24 goals and 40 assists for 64 points with ten penalty minutes. He had two goals and three assists in five playoff games. Malmquist also served as an alternate captain for the Vees in his second season.

Collegiate Career

Malmquist then went on to start his collegiate career where he played Division I hockey at the University of Wisconsin. After two seasons with the Badgers, Malmquist decided to enter the transfer portal. The Edina, Minnesota native ended up getting closer to home, landing a spot with the University of St. Thomas for his final two collegiate seasons. In 142 collegiate games, Malmquist registered 35 goals and 53 assists for 88 points with 34 penalty minutes and a -6. In the 2024-25 season, Malmquist was named to the CCHA First All-Star Team.

AHL Experience

After completing his collegiate career, Malmquist started his professional career, signing in the AHL with the Manitoba Moose where he played in five games to finish his 2024-25 season. He registered two goals with two penalty minutes and a +2 in the five games.

What He Brings to Wichita

Liam Malmquist provides a lot of offense for his team, both by scoring goals and setting up teammates to score. He can score from almost anywhere, whether it be on a breakaway, a net front shot, from the faceoff circles, or the top of the zone. Malmquist will be in his rookie season, so it may take him some time to adjust to the style of play in the ECHL, but he should provide a lot of offense for the Steelheads.
