The Iowa Heartlanders made a deadline-day deal with the Newfoundland Growlers, acquiring defenceman Matt Brassard in exchange for future considerations. Brassard has an unusual career as he played four seasons in the OHL, putting up 40 goals and 103 assists for 143 points in 222 games, spending time with the Barrie Colts, Oshawa Generals, and Niagra Ice Dogs. The Ontario Native would then head to the ECHL for a season playing with the Fort Wayne Komets and Wichita Thunder, where he’d put up a goal and two assists in 14 games. The 6’2 blueline would then head off to the University of Prince Edward Island, where he spent a little over three seasons putting up ten goals and 35 assists for 47 points in 57 games.
Brassard has spent the past two seasons bouncing around the ECHL, playing with the Savannah Ghost Pirates, Allen Americans, and Newfoundland Growlers. Since returning from USports, he has scored four goals and 12 assists in 49 games. The former Vancouver Canucks draft pick will add some much-needed experience to a Hearlanders blueline and should find his way into the Heartlanders lineup rather quickly once he arrives in Iowa.
