With the 2023-2024 season quickly approaching, teams are still trying to fill their roster to compete this coming season. The Kansas City Mavericks add three more to the roster, starting with the return of defenseman Theo Calvas and then signing another defenseman Marc-Oliver Duquette, followed by Jaxon Castor. With more signings to come, let’s jump in-depth about these three signings and how they will help the Mavericks with the upcoming season.
To start with, the returning guy Theo Calvas. Calvas is returning with the Mavericks, with it being his third season with them since joining back in the 2020-2021 season. Calvas is coming off his career-high and best season as a professional hockey player with seven goals and sixteen assists, totaling twenty-three points last year, appearing in sixty-nine games. He was excellent last year on the PK unit for the Mavericks. Kansas City Mavericks assistant Coach Riley Weseloski had some very good words to say about Calvas returning to the team. ” We are happy to be bringing back Theo for another season in a MAVS uniform. Over the past two seasons, he was developed into a very reliable defenseman. He was solid on the PK last season and really found a way to contribute offensively. We believe Teddy is going to have a big summer and will continue to elevate his game to be a major part of our back end this season.”
Next up is the signing of Marc-Oliver Duquette. Marc-Oliver is joining the Mavericks after spending the last two seasons with the Maine Mariners. In two seasons with the Maine Mariners, Duquette has put up eight goals and four assists in the 21-22 season, then three goals and 15 assists in the 22-23 season. Kansas City Mavericks General Manager / Head Coach Tad O’Had had a few words to say about the signing of Marc-Oliver. ” Marc-Oliver is a well-established D-man entering his fourth ECHL season. He skates very well, has a physical presence, and a smart stick. He was excellent last season for Maine, and we look to build on his strengths. We are constructing a strong D-core, and Duquette will be a major part of that rock-solid blue line. We love his experience and feel that he can have a breakout season.” The way the coach talked, it sounded like he’s going to be a good leader for the defense of the Kansas City Mavericks.
The last signing the Mavericks have done so far is signing Goaltender Jaxon Castor. Castor is joining the Mavericks after joining the league with the Florida Everblades. Castor did appear in two games for the Everblades with a .912 save percentage and 2.07 allowed goals per game. Castor did spend five years at St. Cloud State University. In his first season at St. Cloud Univ. (18-19), he appeared in 11 games with a save percentage of .946 and with goals allowed of 2.09. In Castor’s second and third seasons at St. Cloud, he only appeared in 10 games, with five in each 19-20 and 20-21 seasons. In the 19-20 season, he only had a save percentage of .859%, allowing 3.65 goals per game. Then 20-21 season Castor had a save percentage of .914%, allowing only 1.75 goals per game. Then the last two seasons for Jaxon at St. Cloud Univ. In 21-22 and 22-23, Jaxon appeared in 32 games for them. With these recent signings by the Mavericks, they are starting to fill their roster spots quickly to build a team that will push for the playoff and then push for the cup to bring it back home in Kansas City.
