ECHL: Kansas City Mavericks add Assistant Coach and Forward

Kansas City Mavericks/ECHL

The Kansas City Mavericks have taken a measured approach to signings this offseason. With Cade Borchardt and Damien Giroux heading overseas, fans have been eagerly awaiting news on the roster front. So far, the only official announcement had been the return of Casey Carreau and the signing of Lucas Sowder—until now.

Friday, the Mavericks announced that they had hired new Goalie and Video Coach PD Melgoza, following Thursday’s news of the return of rookie forward Nathan Dunkley.

PD Melgoza brings over eight years of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I and USHL levels, specializing in goaltender development, defense, and performance strategy. Most recently, an Assistant Coach at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, he led goaltending and defensive systems while playing a key role in recruiting. His previous roles include time with the Waterloo Blackhawks (USHL) and the University of Alaska-Anchorage.

“I’m extremely excited and honored to join the Kansas City Mavericks. This is a premier organization, and coaching professionally has been a lifelong goal of mine. I couldn’t be more thrilled to start this journey with a first-class team like the Mavericks.”~ Melgoza.

Nationally, Melgoza serves as USA Hockey’s Pacific District Goaltending Coordinator and has coached with the NTDP and Team USA at the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. In the offseason, he continues to work with NHL goaltenders and collaborates with NHL goalie coaches—including Colin Zulianello (Seattle Kraken) and Thomas Speer (San Jose Sharks)—in elite summer training environments, working with players such as Jeremy Swayman.

“The Kansas City Mavericks are thrilled to announce the hiring of PD Melgoza. PD is a rising star in the coaching world who has already made a significant impact at both the USHL and NCAA levels. He is an intelligent and poised goaltending coach whose calm demeanor and leadership allow him to quickly build trust with his goalies.

PD has played an instrumental role in USA Hockey’s national festivals, the Hlinka Gretzky Tournament, and currently serves as the Pacific District Goalie Coordinator and Chief. His experience and reputation speak for themselves. We see PD as a major addition to our coaching staff, taking on the role of Goaltending and Video Coach, and we are incredibly excited to welcome him to Mavs Country.”~ Tad O’had Head Coach

Mavericks Add Depth Up Front with Return of Nathan Dunkley

Nathan Dunkley, who made a strong impression at the end of last season, is a dynamic, two-way forward who brought energy, offensive instincts, and reliable play to the lineup during the final stretch, earning him another opportunity heading into the new campaign.

Dunkley developed through the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), playing with both the Kingston Frontenacs and the London Knights. He then took his talents overseas, competing in Sweden’s Hockeyettan league with Wings HC Arlanda and Hudiksvalls HC. After his time in Europe, he returned to North America and played four seasons of collegiate hockey at St. Mary’s University, graduating in 2025.

Following graduation, Dunkley signed his first professional contract with the Mavericks—and wasted no time making an impact. In 15 regular-season games, he recorded 12 points (seven goals, five assists), followed by four points (one goal, three assists) in 11 playoff appearances, showcasing his ability to perform in high-pressure situations.

To continue developing his game during the offseason, Dunkley ventured to Australia to join the Melbourne Mustangs of the AIHL. In just six games, he tallied four goals and 12 assists for a remarkable 16 points. Now, back in North America, fans can look forward to watching his continued growth and contribution in the upcoming season.
