The Kansas City Mavericks have officially announced the addition of Brett Ferguson as an Assistant Coach, bringing with him a well-rounded resume that spans multiple levels of North American hockey.
Ferguson’s athletic roots run deep. A dual-sport standout in his youth, he captured two high school state hockey championships and one in baseball. After a stint in the USHL, he attended the University of South Carolina Aiken, graduating as a Gamecock while playing collegiate baseball. Post-graduation, he returned to his hockey roots, beginning his coaching career as an assistant with the Des Moines Buccaneers in the USHL.
Climbing the Ranks: From Ducks to the ECHL
In 2010, Brett Ferguson joined the Anaheim Ducks organization, initially working with their AHL affiliate, the Norfolk Admirals—later rebranded as the San Diego Gulls. Starting as a video coach, he steadily advanced to become an Assistant Coach with the Gulls. His time in the NHL included a stint as the Ducks’ video coach, rounding out a strong foundation in both player development and team operations.
Ferguson’s coaching journey continued in 2024 when he joined the ECHL’s Allen Americans as an Assistant Coach. Less than six months later, he stepped into the role of Interim Head Coach following the departure of BJ Adams. Although the Americans struggled under his leadership—posting a 6-34 record during his tenure and finishing the season at the bottom of the Western Conference—Ferguson’s experience navigating adversity adds a valuable perspective to the Mavericks’ bench.
New Chapter in Mavs Country
“My family and I are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join the Kansas City Mavericks organization. We’re looking forward to discovering everything the great city of Kansas City has to offer. I want to thank Tad O’Had, the Mavericks’ management, and ownership for this opportunity.
From the opposing bench, I always recognized the Mavericks as a first-class organization. I love the team’s commitment to success both on the ice and in the community. The Orange Army makes Cable Dahmer Arena one of the toughest buildings to play in the ECHL, and I can’t wait to get started and help continue the drive toward a Kelly Cup.” ~Assistant Coach Brett Ferguson.
As Ferguson joins Head Coach Tad O’Had and the Mavericks’ staff, his blend of NHL, AHL, and ECHL experience is expected to bolster the team’s development efforts. His appointment also raises questions among fans: Could this signal the start of a wave of player signings?
“The Mavericks are incredibly excited about this hire. Brett rose to the top of an impressive pool of applicants. He’s a coach with purpose and passion, and an exceptional hockey mind with elite video analysis skills. He’s worked alongside some of the NHL and AHL’s top coaches and brings tremendous knowledge and insight to our team.
But what sets Brett apart is his ability to connect with players. He understands what it takes to thrive in professional hockey and is committed to making us better every day. His impact will be felt across player development, team systems, structure, and pre-scout preparation.
In speaking with over a dozen former players, coaches, and colleagues, one thing became crystal clear—Brett is highly respected as a coach, mentor, and person. He exemplifies the culture we continue to build in Mavs Country. Our mission is simple: to be all-in on making our players and organization the best it can be as we push toward the Kelly Cup,” ~ Mavericks General Manager and Head Coach Tad O’Had.
With popular forward Cade Borchardt already heading overseas, the offseason buzz is growing louder. As Kansas City prepares for the 2025-26 campaign, one thing is certain—change is in the air, and the Mavericks are getting to work.
