The Kansas City Mavericks have announced that they have re-signed defenseman Justin MacPherson for the 2023-24 season. MacPherson made the jump to the ECHL at the end of the regular season after spending three years at St.Mary’s University, where he put up 10 goals and 49 assists for 59 points in 71 games. The 24-year-old defenseman would originally sign with the Florida Everblades and would play just one game with the Blades before being dealt to the Mavericks. In 11 regular season games with the Mavericks, MacPherson would put up four assists and would add one goal and two assists for three points in 13 Kelly Cup Playoff games, as his first professional goal came in the Kelly Cup Finals against his former team, he would also pick up his first pro fight in the Toledo series when he fought Jason Willms.
“Justin MacPherson came to the Mavericks from a late-season trade with Florida. Justin is a great puck-moving defenseman with a great handle and is allusive”, said General Manager and Head Coach Tad O’Had. “He skates well, makes plays, and sees the ice incredibly well. We see Justin as a major part of a very deep defensive core.”

This is a really solid signing for the Mavericks. MacPherson fit right in after joining last season and could easily become an everyday player on their blueline moving forward. The Mavericks also get a young defenseman who now has some Kelly Cup Playoff experience under his belt and has already gotten his first pro goal out of the way. Expect the Ontario defenseman to play a sizable role next season in KC.
