The Maine Mariners have gone out and acquired defenceman Billy Constantinou from the Cincinnati Cyclones in exchange for future considerations. Constantinou is what you would consider an ECHL journeyman, as the Mainers will be his sixth ECHL team as he’s entering his third ECHL season. The 22-year-old defenceman has spent time with the Iowa Heartlander, Atlanta Gladiators, Wichita Thunder, Norfolk Admirals, Cincinnati Cyclones, and now the Maine Mariners. Over the course of his career, he’s put up 13 goals and 49 assists for 62 points in 114 games and was named to the ECHL All-Star game last season.
This is a solid move by the Mariners as Ryan Mast was called up to Providence earlier today, which left Maine with only six healthy defencemen, as Owen Norton is on IR. Adding the Ontario native to the Mariners blueline gives the team more options on the blueline as well as an experienced body who, with his experience, should have no problem adjusting quickly to his new team. Maine comes into the day ranked 24th in the league, giving up over four goals a game, and 23rd in the league when it comes to shots against at over 34 a game. Regardless of when Mast gets back to the Mariners, I expect Constantinou to be an important part of Maine’s depth on the blueline moving forward.
